ACTION OF THE WEEK: Break that bad habit!

Break up with your bad habit

We all have that bad habit we just can’t shake - whether it’s late-night ice creams, too many cigarettes, or just one more episode before bedtime.

The thing about habits is that they’re habitual. Meaning, we engage in them rather unconsciously. This is true for both good and bad habits - we trust the habit loops in our brains to carry us through the process.

Breaking up with your bad habit isn’t about simply stopping your engagement. It’s about completely rewiring your mental loops so you don’t get triggered or feel any cravings anymore.

Forget about putting in a lot of effort and instead, create an environment where your bad habit fades away on its own.

There are four parts to a habit: Cue, Craving, Response, and Reward. Let’s take a closer look at them:

  1. Cue - Trigger for the habit

  2. Craving - Motivation behind the habit

  3. Response - Action you perform

  4. Reward - To satisfy and teach us
