Stop thinking, start discarding
from Goodbye, Things: The New Japanese Minimalism by Fumio Sasaki
How to Apply This
-
Make a strong decision to keep only a few truly necessary things - write them down
Turning a living environment into a minimalist place is not easy if we don’t have a strong reason and firm decision. Make a decision and list of items you want to keep (essential things) and stick to it. -
Discard all you can during one week or two
Set each day in a week for discarding a different category of things. For example,
- Monday: discard all the junk from the apartment,
- Tuesday: discard everything you have two of,
- Wednesday: discard electrical appliances,
- Thursday: sell or give away all books and decorations from your shelves,
- Friday: get rid of excess items from the closet,
- Saturday: discard everything you have in multiples,
- Sunday: toss things you haven’t used in a year. -
Give yourself time by saying “see you later” to some things
If you have difficulties throwing away some things, put them aside for a while while you reflect on whether you really need them. -
Make discarding a habit
Discard one thing every day.
