Learn how to say no.
from Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert B. Cialdini
Many of us comply with requests or buy certain products because we like the person offering it to us. However, separating our feelings for that person from the decision is important for us to accurately judge whether we should say yes or no.
How to Apply This
-
Identify when you like someone more than you should.
Ask yourself, “In the amount of time that I have known this person, have I come to like him more than I expected?” When you like someone more quickly or deeper than you should, they could be trying to manipulate you into complying with them. -
If the answer is yes, take a closer look at what they are selling.
Focus on the raw details of what the person is asking you to comply with. Regardless of your feelings for that person, should you say yes to their request? Think critically and say no if necessary.
