Encourage mastery in your team members and/or employees of your organization.

Remember, mastery is a mindset, and it is fueled by perseverance and passion for long-term goals (i.e., grit). Grit can only be achieved with intrinsic motivation, and the above steps will help you inspire such intrinsic motivation in your team members/employees.

Lastly, keep in mind that mastery is an asymptote—this means that it is something that can be approached closely but can never be fully achieved. Don’t let this discourage you from trying to achieve it, though; simply putting in the effort to achieve mastery will yield positive results.


  1. Understand what mastery is.
    Mastery refers to the desire to get better and better at something that matters. It is one of the most important characteristics of a successful person.

  2. Provide your team members/employees with “Goldilocks tasks.”
    This refers to tasks that are not too hot and not too cold; i.e., they are not too simple or difficult. With tasks that are too simple, people will get bored. With tasks that are too difficult, people will get anxiety. Both will affect their performance, therefore, finding tasks that are ideal for them will help them achieve their best work.

  3. *Turn work into play.*
    Reframe aspects of your team member’s duties, especially if these duties are mundane and boring. Here is a simple example: Members of the cleaning staff at a hospital were observed to take on new tasks, such as chatting with the patients or helping the nurses in any way possible. Adding these more interesting tasks to their daily routine boosted their satisfaction and helped them view their previously tedious job in a more positive light.
