Develop your small talk skills

Instructions

  1. Utilize non-verbal communication.
When you meet someone for the first time: Smile, maintain balanced eye contact, unfold your arms and relax physical tension, actively listen - nod and lean in, and use touch to convey the right amount of intimacy.
  2. Prepare.
Before attending a social or work event, prepare something to talk about and share with others. This could be a current event, interest, or hobby you know a lot about. Share your passion without monopolizing the conversation.
  3. Learn to adjust your window.
When you next speak to a new person, pay attention to their communication style. For example, notice the intonation and volume of their voice and their body language. Adjust your behavior to mirror their conversational style to make them feel more comfortable.
