Become a more selfless leader

Instructions

  1. Evaluate your attitude.
In situations where you’re required to serve others’ needs, check to see how you respond. If you become impatient, feel resentful, or believe that certain tasks are beneath you, then your attitude is not as good as it should be. If you feel excited, then you have a servant’s heart, which is a good leadership trait.
  2. Perform small acts of service.
Make it a practice to perform small acts of service to others without seeking credit or recognition from them. Continue until you totally enjoy doing them.
  3. Be interested in those around you.
Make a list of the most important people in your life —from home, work, church, hobbies, and so on. Write down what each of them values most, then rate yourself on a scale of 1 to 10 on how well you relate to their values. If you can’t articulate what someone values or you score lower than an 8 in relating to it, spend more time with them and get to know them better.
  4. Make adding value part of your lifestyle.
Begin with those closest to you, then extend to those you lead. If there are only a few, add value individually. If you lead large numbers of people, you may have to think of ways to serve groups as well as individuals.
