Write about science and technology

Write about science and technology

from On Writing Well: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction by William Zinsser

How to Apply This

  1. Make your lead simple.
Avoid clustering it with powerful scientific terms that fail to give your readers a vivid image of what you are about to communicate.

  2. Describe how a process works.
Take your readers through the same sequence of ideas and deductions that made the process clear to you.

  3. Use the pyramid format.
Start at the bottom with the one fact the reader must know before they can learn any more. For example, for human beings to reproduce, sperms must meet and fertilize an egg.

  4. Take much of the mystery out of science.
Look for human elements that will help the readers identify with the scientific work being done.

  5. Be yourself.
Write like a person and not a scientist. Write in fresh English, but in a manner that will be understood by your readers.
