When things get tough, remind yourself of your motivations.

from The Willpower Instinct: How Self-Control Works, Why It Matters, and What You Can Do to Get More of It by Kelly McGonigal

You may choose to use one of these three steps, a combination of two, or all three, to motivate yourself to keep working at your goal. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to remind yourself of your motivation whenever you feel like giving up.

How to Apply This

  1. Think about the benefits you will gain from achieving your goal.

  2. Think about who else will benefit from you achieving your goal.
For example, if your goal is to have better spending habits, your family will benefit. If your goal is to be more productive at work, your boss will benefit.

  3. Remind yourself that your goal will only get easier to achieve over time.
The beginning is the hardest. Once you get into the rhythm of practicing habits that will help you achieve your goal, you won’t find it so difficult anymore!
