Use simple tools and techniques to stay on top of your network

Instructions

  1. Categorize your contacts based on preferred criteria
You can segment people based on the industry, for example, by creating a category for tech people. You can also categorize your contact list based on seniority e.g. chief executives who earn above a specific amount. Use a spreadsheet with the person’s name, where you met them, and what you discussed. The spreadsheet can also contain a Notes column with special information about an individual e.g. “Brother works for Teach for America.”

  2. Use good time management when engaging your network
Some people in your network are drainers and may not have as much value to provide as others. Therefore, create email templates saying no to different requests. For example, if you don’t have the time and someone requests you to be a guest on their podcast, you can reply using the email template. This keeps your time free for more meaningful contacts.
