Use algorithms to declutter

Use algorithms to declutter

from Algorithms to Live By: The Computer Science of Human Decisions by Brian Christian, Tom Griffiths

How to Apply This

  1. Get rid of unnecessary things by using the Random Eviction method.
When you want to clear your desk or your closet and you don’t really care about which items you want to keep, simply try throwing out anything you think you don’t need.

  2. Organize your space using the First In, First Out Rule (FIFO).
Get rid of the oldest things on your desk or from your closet. Making space for new things means replacing the old ones with the new ones.

  3. Declutter your mind and space using the Least Recently Used Rule (LRU).
If you want to be more attentive to the stuff you throw away and if you are nervous about getting rid of things, thinking that eventually, you might need them, you can try organizing your things into piles: Least Recently Used and Most Recently Used. Get rid of the stuff from the first pile and make room for new things.
