Use a morning or evening routine to boost your energy for your daily highlight

from Make Time: How to Focus on What Matters Every Day by Jake Knapp, John Zeratsky

How to Apply This

  1. If you want to work on your highlight in the morning, wake up early.
Set your alarm to wake up early, say 5:30 am, and light up your house as soon as you wake up. This will distract you from falling back asleep.

  2. Give yourself something to do as soon as you wake up.
For example, you could decide to exercise, iron shirts, or do the dishes. You will find it easier to wake up early when you have something to do.

  3. Manage your diet to have better sleep.
Eat foods like almonds, fatty fish, and walnuts as they are known to improve sleep. You will be able to perform your daily highlight well in the morning after a night of good quality sleep.

  4. If you want to work on your highlight in the evening, recharge your brain in the hours prior.
For example, watch part of a movie with your family around 8:30 pm or read a few pages of a novel. This will keep you relaxed and refreshed.

  5. Go offline, preferably from about 8:30 to 9:30 pm.
This will give your brain some much-needed time to relax.

  6. Go to bed at the right time.
Go to bed after spending about 60 to 90 minutes on your daily highlight. Going to bed not later than 11:30 pm will enable you to perform optimally the next day.
