Understand yourself.

Understanding your past will help you better understand who you are and why you behave the way you do. You may then realize what lies at the root of all your conflicts.

Once you’ve understood and defined yourself, you may be able to pinpoint the exact aspects of yourself you’d like to change for the better. If you don’t like your current definition of yourself so much, remember that you are free to change your identity whenever you want.


  1. Write down your five most powerful experiences.
    Grab a piece of paper and write down the top five experiences that have shaped who you’ve become as a person. Include a few lines about how each experience impacted you.
  2. Put a positive spin on any negative experiences.
    Interpret all your experiences positively, no matter how difficult it may seem. There is value in all human experience, so find your value.
  3. Define yourself.
    You could define yourself by your emotions (I’m peaceful), your profession (I’m an attorney), your income (I’m a millionaire), your behaviour (I’m a gambler), etc. Write down all the definitions of yourself that come to mind until you find the one you feel the strongest about.
  4. Write the dictionary definition of yourself.
    If you were to look yourself up in a dictionary, what would you see? Think about what you would put on an ID card of you to show others. Write it down.
