Tune Into Hidden Motivators Without Pushing or Manipulating

Instructions

  1. Observe what energizes (or drains) people around you. For each teammate, friend, or family member, notice what they seem eager to volunteer for—and what tasks make them procrastinate or grumble.

  2. Have a motivator conversation. Ask, 'What makes a job or project rewarding for you?' Listen for clues about achievement, creativity, status, companionship, autonomy, security, or purpose.

  3. Adjust assignments and recognition. When possible, assign jobs or praise in ways that tie to each person’s motivators—without using them to manipulate, guilt, or pressure.

  4. Name and address fairness concerns. Ask, 'Does anyone feel a rule or reward is not being applied consistently?' Address these concerns promptly to maintain trust.
