Tune Into Hidden Motivators Without Pushing or Manipulating
Instructions
-
Observe what energizes (or drains) people around you. For each teammate, friend, or family member, notice what they seem eager to volunteer for—and what tasks make them procrastinate or grumble.
-
Have a motivator conversation. Ask, 'What makes a job or project rewarding for you?' Listen for clues about achievement, creativity, status, companionship, autonomy, security, or purpose.
-
Adjust assignments and recognition. When possible, assign jobs or praise in ways that tie to each person’s motivators—without using them to manipulate, guilt, or pressure.
-
Name and address fairness concerns. Ask, 'Does anyone feel a rule or reward is not being applied consistently?' Address these concerns promptly to maintain trust.
