Think outside-the-box

Instructions

  1. Look for a better solution.
We tend to get fixated on solutions that might appear to be good, but in reality, there could be better alternatives. Adler could have worked on the solution proposed by the other engineers, but he came up with an alternative that proved to be successful. Don’t settle for the first solution you came up with.
  2. Formulate different kinds of questions.
A question will determine the nature of the answer. If we keep asking the same questions, we’ll get the same answers. Try asking different questions to test different perspectives and determine whether you can find a better answer to an issue.
  3. Try to do the reverse of what you were doing.
Fosbury was called crazy when he tried the opposite of what everyone was doing, but his method proved to be better than the conventional one. Try using this approach next time you are trying to solve a problem.
