Think about mortality so you won’t waste more time - Memento mori

from The Little Book of Stoicism: Timeless Wisdom to Gain Resilience, Confidence, and Calmness by Jonas Salzgeber

How to Apply This

  1. Accept the fact that nothing lasts forever.
When you hug your loved one or say goodbye, remind yourself this might be your final parting. Apply the same to any inanimate property (smartphone, car, house, etc.) By accepting this, you will cling less to things in life and value them more.

  2. Remind yourself of your own mortality too.
We don’t know how much time we have left. So, it is better to focus on what matters to us. Is watching the news more essential than playing with your children in having a better life? Always ask yourself: is this needed to have a fulfilled life?

  3. Imagine yourself at the end of your life.
Did you do everything you wanted? What is missing from your life? What is preventing you from doing those things? Remember, you have a finite amount of time. Make good use of it.
