Recognize your feelings when comparing yourself to others.

Recognize your feelings when comparing yourself to others.

from Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience by Brené Brown

How to Apply This

  1. Compare yourself only to people you relate to.
Even though it is natural to compare ourselves, exaggerating it is wrong. You should be aware when you compare yourself to others and recognize which feeling you experience. Is it admiration, envy, jealousy, resentment, schadenfreude, or freudenfreude?

  2. Express yourself.
When expressing your feelings, do not do it in a hostile manner. Take a moment to understand what you feel, and then vocalize it properly in small doses.

  3. Remind yourself that if others can do it, you can do it, too.
Remember that when someone achieves a goal, it is a sign you can do it, too. If we’d take others’ successes as life lessons instead of being envious of them, we can improve ourselves.
