Unconditional Parenting
Raising children
Practice unconditional acceptance and love
from Unconditional Parenting: Moving from Rewards and Punishments to Love and Reason by Alfie Kohn
How to Apply This
- Analyze your words and actions.
Before you say or act, ask yourself, "Would I feel unconditionally loved if the words I want to say to my children were said to me?" When the response to that question is clearly "no," change your plan. - Reaffirm love and acceptance.
Regularly remind your children how much you love them, no matter how much you dislike their actions. Even if you disagree with their behavior, explain why their behavior should be corrected while emphasizing their sense of love and worth. - Reduce criticism.
Watch how often you criticize your child and make each criticism less harsh. Always give explanations, talk respectfully and treat your children with kindness, empathy, and support. This is how you can be a better parent.
