Negotiate for a higher salary

from Professional Troublemaker: The Fear-Fighter Manual by Luvvie Ajayi Jones

How to Apply This

  1. Research the industry you’re going into
Find out how much money your peers within the industry are making. How much compensation do people get for comparable work? Knowing this information gives you leverage when you’re negotiating for a job.

  2. Know what your skills are worth
If you know what you’re worth, then understand that it’s not greedy to ask to be compensated accordingly. Be confident when asking for more money because you know that you’re worth it.

  3. State the amount with an exclamation point, not a question mark
When you’re asked to give your expected salary, say, “I’d like $100,000!” instead of “Umm…I’d like $100,000???” Speak bluntly instead of using a high-pitched voice as if you’re asking a question. Once you’ve stated the amount, shut up and wait for a response. Even if the hirer stays silent, wait for them to say something instead of rushing to lower your demands.
