Model behaviors and encourage your staff to practice them

Model behaviors and encourage your staff to practice them

from Working with Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman

How to Apply This

  1. Ensure the training program contains practice sessions and guidelines on how to practice at work and at home.
Self-directed learning can and should go on whenever and wherever the opportunity arises.
  2. Advise staff that establishing a habit may take 3-6 months or longer.
Long-established habits, like having a short temper or being a perfectionist, are deeply ingrained. In such cases, we need to work both at unlearning the old, automatic habit and at replacing it with the new, improved one.
  3. Identify staff who exemplify competence at their best.
Give them ongoing evaluation and feedback on their competencies. This will help them maintain their competencies. Eventually, the habits of working at and modeling the competencies have to permeate the culture of the workplace.
