Manage your time and energy better

Instructions

  1. Keep a “tight but loose” schedule.
Make a to-do list and break it into 3 categories: areas that need minor tweaks or improvements, bigger issues that still require a lot of work, and the big bold moves meant to set the business moving in the right direction. If you find that everything you’re doing is in the first category — trivial stuff — then you need to loosen your schedule by delegating that and focusing more on the other two categories.
  2. Care enough to compartmentalize.
Resist the pressure to bring work home. Also, avoid carrying the issues from one meeting into the next. Make a conscious choice to be in the moment with those around you, whether at work or at home.
  3. Infuse energy into your routine.
Be aware of what generates and depletes your energy and work hard to avoid energy troughs — long periods of activity after which you’re worn down and frustrated. Schedule your most strategic and important meetings for the times of the day when you’re most energized. Also, ensure enough recovery time is built into your schedule so you won’t burn out.
  4. Tailor your support staff to your needs.
In addition to having an administrative assistant who manages your calendar and logistics for travel and events, include a Chief of Staff to your personal team to help manage the complexity of your job.
