Make your tedious tasks easier and more enjoyable to work on

Instructions

  1. Invert the assumption that meaningful work has to be difficult.
If you’re working on an essential task that seems tedious, ask yourself: Am I making the task harder than it needs to be? If yes, try to look for ways how you could finish the work more easily without sacrificing its quality. For example, suppose you’re having difficulty finding where to invest in the stock market. In that case, you could make the work easier by searching for companies in which accomplished investors are investing. Then, follow their steps.
  2. Look for an indirect approach to make impossibly hard work possible.
If you’ve been procrastinating about cleaning your garage full of old equipment, for example, you can invite your friends to come over and let them grab whatever equipment they may need for free. Once you’ve removed most of the stuff, you can now easily clean out what’s left.
  3. Combine your tedious, essential tasks with those you enjoy the most.
For example, doing household chores while listening to music.
  4. Split your essential but tedious work into sessions.
If you’re engaging in a strenuous mental or physical activity, start in the morning and split your work into three sessions of 60-90 minutes each. Make sure you have a 10-15 minutes break between sessions to allow you to recharge. This can also improve your long-term performance.
  5. Reward yourself after completing any tedious assignment.
For example, if you hate doing your weekly bookkeeping, commit to rewarding yourself with your favorite treat once you’ve finished the task. The reward will help you endure the difficult work.
  6. Get enough sleep.
Make sure you get adequate sleep of at least seven hours every night. To ensure you get deep and uninterrupted sleep, sleep at the same time every night, turn off your digital devices an hour before bedtime, and take a hot shower 90 minutes before sleeping. Alternatively, if you can’t get enough sleep at night, take a nap during the day. Wear an eye mask to block out light and put on earplugs to block noise. Set the alarm for 90 minutes and sleep, knowing that your work will be accomplished with greater ease once you wake up fully rested.
