Make Room for Challenging, Low-Stakes Experiences

Instructions

  1. Allow children to struggle and face frustration. When your child faces difficulties with peers, chores, or learning, resist the urge to instantly intervene.

  2. Frame setbacks as part of growth. Use language that makes mistakes normal: 'Everyone learns by failing sometimes; what can we try next?'

  3. Celebrate recovery and problem-solving. Notice and praise your child’s efforts to persist, negotiate, or make amends after a challenging event.
