Improve your chances of finding a job via online job listings

from Designing Your Life: How to Build a Well-Lived, Joyful Life by Bill Burnett, Dave Evans

How to Apply This

  1. Describe yourself using the same keywords as on the job description
For example, if the job description says “Good writing skills,” include those exact keywords instead of putting “I’m a good writer” in your resume. This will raise your chances of being discovered in a keyword scan. If you don’t have the skill the company wants, find a way to describe the skill you have using the same keywords as in the job posting.
  2. Focus on what you can offer as described in the listing
Use your resume to talk about what you can do for the company instead of why the job is a good fit for you. Be specific in how you can answer the needs of the company. Describe yourself as someone who has specialized in that field instead of appearing as a multidisciplinary individual.
  3. Carry a clean, printed copy of your resume to the interview
This will show the interviewer how much care you put into designing your resume.
