Hear everybody’s ideas to make better decisions

Instructions

  1. Start with the first principles.
The first principles are the key truths about the company and the product. They are things that everybody can agree on. For example, everybody may agree on a clear goal for the product or a target audience. It could also be a general truth about the company culture and direction. Consider what these principles are so you can build the discussion around them.
  2. Have one-on-one meetings before the discussion.
Before meeting with everybody to discuss the issue, have separate one-on-one meetings with each of them. Get everybody to explain their opinion on the matter and offer their solution. This gives you a clear idea of where everybody stands. Explaining it to you beforehand also helps employees gather their thoughts so they can better explain themselves during the discussion.
  3. Let everybody speak in turn.
When you come to meet with everybody, the discussion must be structured. Let everybody speak one at a time, and you should always speak last. This gives everybody a chance to explain their solution to the problem fully.
  4. Make a decision.
Hopefully, the right answer will present itself when everybody clearly offers a solution. However, if this does not happen right away, put a time limit on it. For example, give everybody a week before meeting again, and let them know that you will be the one to decide if a solution is still not reached by then. Remember to be decisive and choose a solution yourself whenever necessary.
