Get the most out of your routine

from Peak Performance: Elevate Your Game, Avoid Burnout, and Thrive with the New Science of Success by Brad Stulberg, Steve Magness

How to Apply This

  1. Develop warm-up routines for activities.
You can warm up for specific activities and tasks by putting yourself in the right mindset. This might include meditation or breathing techniques, for example. Some people like to list the steps required to complete tasks too. Even tidying your desk, exercising, or taking a short walk can help. Everybody is different, so find whatever it is that helps you get into the right frame of mind.

  2. Create the right environment.
Your environment greatly impacts your ability to focus and stay productive. You should have specific environments for certain tasks. For work-related tasks, this will likely be an office space, but you can choose other spaces for different activities. Keep your environment tidy and fill it with items that encourage focus and productivity. Working in the same place will rewire your brain so that you feel motivated to work and can focus whenever you are in that environment.

  3. Condition yourself to perform.
Simple conditioning tips can help improve your performance. If you align activities with certain cues, it will inspire you to work. One example is performing a task at the same time of day or in the same environment. You could also create other cues, like a deep breathing exercise or a few stretches that you do before working on a certain task.
