Fructify discussions
from Thinking in Bets: Making Smarter Decisions When You Don't Have All the Facts by Annie Duke
How to Apply This
-
Present all the accurate facts.
When engaged in a discussion, make sure to state the complete facts without leaving out bits of information that you consider irrelevant. Someone might pick up something you haven’t seen as relevant or can shape a complete perspective based on it. -
Detangle the “message” from ‘the messenger.”
When receiving information, don’t disapprove just because you don’t value the person delivering it or another source where it can come from. -
Use “and” instead of “but” in your discussion.
Implementing this trick will make you seem more open-minded and less hostile when dealing with an opposing view. -
Ask if the person needs advice or they just need someone to vent out to.
Only give them advice if they need it.
