Follow what excites you.
from The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss
The opposite of happiness is not sadness. It is boredom. People ask themselves, “What do I want?” or, “What are my goals?” while the better question is, “What would excite me?”
When people say to follow your passion or your bliss, they’re actually referring to the same singular concept: excitement.
How to Apply This
Do this exercise in order to get yourself more and to reverse repression.
-
Make two timelines, for six and for 12 months.
Ask yourself: What would you do if you could not fail? -
List five things on each timeline for each category:
Don’t judge yourself; write down everything that you desire.- Material wants (house, cars).
- Being (be fluent in Mandarin).
- Doing (visiting Thailand).
-
Convert each “being” into a “doing.”
For example, convert “be fluent in Mandarin” into “have a five-minute conversation with a Chinese coworker.” -
Highlight the four most exciting and/or important dreams from everything you’ve written down.
Do this for both the six-month and 12-month timelines. -
Estimate how much money you must earn monthly to make your dreams happen.
Things usually cost less than expected. -
Determine the three steps required for each of the four dreams.
And take the first step now.
