Evaluate team members and provide effective feedback

Instructions

  1. Use a combination of external methods to assess individuals’ skills.
    For example, 360-degree methodologies, assessment center - simulations of work situations, or having staff train you in their job.
  2. Compile the evaluations from multiple sources.
    Identify trends, correct distortions, and collect a balanced assortment.
  3. Make time to deliver confidential feedback with empathy, sensitivity, and delicacy in a quiet place.
    Make sure you set aside time, so you won’t be rushed or interrupted. Go gently, don’t try, and cover everything.
  4. Strike a balance between celebrating a person’s strengths and discussing their weaknesses.
    Focusing on people’s weaknesses and failing to note their strengths can be demoralizing rather than motivating. People can gain resolve from the belief that they have the capacity to change.
  5. Offer individual counseling as well as the time to focus on information to develop individual learning plans.
    Help the person interpret the results of their evaluations and use the information to shape a genuinely helpful learning plan.
