Establish yourself as the alpha in the room

Instructions

  1. Step over “beta traps.”
Politely ignore power rituals like small talk, interrupting you to complete non-critical tasks, and dramatic late arrivals. Calmly disregard anything that does not advance your pitch and magnify anything that does. Act with confidence and self-assurance.
  2. Create local star power.
In the meeting, take a mildly shocking and friendly action as soon as possible. Follow it by dominating with your expertise on the topic. Give special attention to the alpha’s subordinate when they engage, such as complimenting their knowledge of the topic. Enjoy yourself and love your work. Be the most relaxed, happy person in the room.
  3. Elevate your situational social status.
Act calmly, unaffected by the alpha’s global position. Find small acts of defiance and denial that are humorous and fun. When you have their full attention, confidently share your in-depth expertise on the subject you are pitching about. View yourself as the reward investors get by saying yes to your pitch. Seek ways to have the alpha regard you as the group's expert. Keep the power game fun and light-hearted with a little edge, demonstrating you are enjoyable to be in business with. Ask fun and provocative qualifying questions like, “Why should I say Yes to you again?
