Encourage individuals to create their own self-development plan

Instructions

  1. Have your staff prioritize their list of competency needs and aspirations.
Prioritize the list of competencies they require for their role and stage of life, those that they are interested in pursuing, those that will set them up for the future, and those they aspire to.
  2. Have your staff write their own action plan, starting with big goals.
Place control of the change process in the individuals’ hands - after all, they are in control anyway. This ensures it is appropriate and relevant.
  3. Ask them to break the goals into clear, realistic, small steps for change.
For example, spending twenty minutes a day meeting with subordinates to delegate responsibilities, eliminating time wasted watching junk TV, and setting aside three hours each week for relaxation.
