Encourage employees to talk about their weekend before meetings

Encourage employees to talk about their weekend before meetings

from Trillion Dollar Coach: The Leadership Playbook of Silicon Valley's Bill Campbell by Eric Schmidt, Jonathan Rosenberg, Alan Eagle

How to Apply This

  1. Start the meeting with a greeting, not a business talk.
The most important thing is that there is no business talk at the beginning of the meeting. Refrain from bringing up any work-related topics and greet everybody informally before the meeting starts.
  2. Tell employees about your weekend.
Start by telling your employees about your weekend. If you have been on a trip, tell them some of the highlights. It doesn’t matter if you didn’t do anything exciting; simply give a few details to give insight into your personal life.
  3. Invite each team member to do the same.
Invite every team member to do the same. If people are unsure about speaking in public about themselves, don’t push them too much. But encourage them to share one small detail about their weekend. Doing this regularly helps employees get to know each other and creates a stronger bond. It also gets everybody in the meeting talking, so they feel more comfortable giving their input later on.
  4. Maintain open conversation for the duration of the meeting.
Once everybody has shared, you can move on to the business-related issues. When discussing this, maintain the open conversation you created at the beginning. If you notice that certain people are not giving their opinion, ask if they have anything to add.
