Declutter your home

Instructions

  1. Remove trash.
Place whatever trash you can see in your black trash bag.
  2. Put things back in their place.
Find the simple things and return them (right now) where they belong.
  3. Manage the “duh” clutter.
Choose a box for items you no longer need but want to donate because they are not for throwing away, and then place all of the "duh things" in it.
  4. Ask decluttering questions.
Take each item and answer the question: “Where would be the first place I'd look for this item if I needed it?” If you know the answer, put that thing in that place. If not, answer the next question: “Would it occur to me that I already had one if I needed this item?” If your answer is no, throw it away or put it in the donation box.
  5. Use containers.
Put similar things in containers. If the place you're working in is still full, keep taking out your less favorite items until just what will fit comfortably remains.
  6. Follow the “One in, one out rule.”
Before adding one new thing to a container that’s already full, take one out first.
