Cultivate happiness

Instructions

  1. Determine the end goals that will truly fulfill you.
Ask yourself: What do I want to experience? How do I want to grow? How do I want to contribute to the world around me? These three questions will give you insight into what will be most fulfilling to you.
  2. Harness the power of community.
Spend more face-to-face time with people who leave you feeling uplifted. After reflecting on who you want to be, what you want to accomplish, and the impact you desire to have, seek out relationships that will help you grow and achieve these ends.
  3. Practice meditation.
If you do not have a meditation practice, find a meditation class or use an app like “10% Happier” or “Energy for Success.” Start with five minutes a day for a month, and then increase its length later on. Do this regularly.
  4. Spend more time in nature.
Nature bathing or simply spending time in nature has numerous benefits. Get at least 20 minutes of sun exposure daily. Don’t be afraid of the dirt. It benefits us too!
  5. Go to your happy place.
Imagining your “happy place” in your mind during times of stress will promote calmness. Every time you feel overwhelmed, pause for a moment and visualize the place that makes you happy. This will take your nervous system out of fight or flight.
  6. Experience the power of forgiveness.
Write a list of people you’ve been holding a grudge against. Then think of at least one good thing that came from those interactions. Lean into the feeling of gratitude for these experiences, and forgive them from this place of gratitude.
  7. Build your gratitude muscle.
Start and end your day with intentional gratitude. Start the day by journaling what you’re grateful for, how you can make the day a great one, and describing what kind of person you want to be today. Before going to sleep, think of three things you’re grateful for throughout the day. Be sure to appreciate what’s around you every day and actively express your gratitude to others.
