Create more positive perceptions of your goals

Instructions

  1. Create short-term milestones to encourage your brain to stay productive
    Create mini-goals that you can achieve daily so that they act as mental accelerants. For example, you can set markers to show you when you’re at 70% of your mini-goal. If you’re struggling with a boring or challenging project, write down a To-Do list and check off those tasks you’ve already accomplished. This will trigger your brain to release neurochemicals that speed up your progress

  2. Make 70% your target of success
    Design goals that you believe you have more than a 70% chance of achieving. If you believe that you have less than a 70% chance of accomplishing a goal, adjust it to increase your likelihood of success.

  3. Give yourself a head start
    Design your goals with some progress already worked in. For example, if your New Year's resolution is to raise $1,000 for charity, launch your fundraising kitty with some money you’ve already saved instead of starting from zero. If you’ve been exercising for a few days and want to make a progress chart, design the workout chart with several days already checked off instead of starting at Day 1.

  4. Be objective when you’re feeling overwhelmed
    If you’re getting overwhelmed with work, break down each task into objective units instead of focusing on the effort involved. For example, if you’re struggling to solve a tough problem, write down the names of 3 people you can consult. Each name then becomes an objective unit to focus on. This can help you avoid being emotionally hijacked by the perceived effort required.

  5. Look back at your past to help you accelerate forward
    If your team is facing a daunting project, write down a list of past projects that you’ve accomplished. This will remind your brain that success is possible, thus channeling your intellectual resources toward completing that project.

  6. Make your goals more visible
    Create a digital slideshow of words and pictures representing the goals you want to achieve. You can make it a revolving screensaver on your computer. You can also project the slideshow onto a wall in your office to motivate your team.
