Practice mindfulness to stop pragmatism

from Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life by Thich Nhat Hanh

How to Apply This

  1. If you find yourself looking at something to gain something from it, pause for a moment.
When you allow yourself to stop, you’ll begin to see and understand things more beautifully. You’ll stop being pragmatic and start being appreciative of the present moment.

  2. Then, look deeply into that ‘something’ to understand it.
Instead of looking at the flower with the intention of painting it, for example, try to pause and look deeply into it. Be with that flower and see how beautiful it is. Eventually, you’ll find yourself naturally and beautifully painting it!
