Cope with stress

Instructions

  1. Meditate and exercise.
Try meditation to distance yourself from your thoughts and emotions. Practice being present in the moment and observing the sensations you feel. You can do this while sitting, walking, or even showering. Aside from meditation, you can also exercise to reduce stress.
  2. Breath.
When you are stressed, focus on your breathing. Inhale for a few seconds, then exhale for a few seconds longer than you inhaled.
  3. Seek social connections.
Spend quality time with close friends, family, and your partner. Communicate with them, express your worries, but also listen to theirs, try to help them, and truly engage in your relationships.
  4. Set non-self-centered goals.
Establish goals that are not centered on your own needs. Instead, focus on helping others, and relate your engagement and goals to higher values, such as kindness, compassion, bravery, etc. When you feel stressed, reflect on your values by asking yourself: How does this goal meet my values? How do I want to contribute to society? How may my actions help others?
