Connect with your future self

Instructions

  1. Write yourself a letter from your future self.
Write yourself a letter from your future self five, ten, or twenty years down the road. This will help you reflect on your current behaviors, and how they are impacting you in the future. What would your future self tell you to change? What would you thank yourself for?
  2. Imagine your ideal future self.
Choose a time frame, perhaps five years down the road. Write a vivid description of your ideal self at that time. What have you accomplished? What changes have you made? What milestones did you reach? Allow this vision to inspire you to take ownership of your life. Write down, or even make a video of you describing this future state, then set it aside to read or watch at the time that you have decided.
  3. Live today as your twenty-years-from-now self.
Perform a thought exercise where you pretend you are your future self twenty from now coming back in time and getting a second chance to live this day over. This will allow you to see what things you are caught up in that are trivial, and what is truly important.
  4. Consider your memento mori.
Memento mori is an ancient Stoic term for reflecting on the moment of your death. Knowing that death is a possibility every day and reflecting on this possibility will help you see what you truly value in your life, and what is ultimately unimportant.
