Commit to living by your values
from The Happiness Trap: How to Stop Struggling and Start Living: A Guide to ACT by Russ Harris
How to Apply This
-
Focus on thoughts that are connected to your life values.
Discover your values by answering these questions: What is important to you deep down? What do you want to do with your life? What kind of person do you aspire to be? What kinds of relationships do you want to cultivate? List down your values based on these answers, then focus only on thoughts related to your values. When you notice thoughts that take you away from your values, perceive them as ordinary words or stories and let them pass. -
Set meaningful goals according to your values.
Create goals that reflect your values. For instance, if you value meaningful relationships, aim to improve communication with those you care about. If you value good health, prioritize consuming a nutritious diet and exercising regularly. -
Create an action plan according to your values and goals.
Now it's time to put your goals into action and live life according to your values. Create a specific action plan for each goal. For example: "My value is health, so my goal is to eat well and exercise regularly, so my action plan is to eat two portions of fruits and vegetables each day and go to pilates three times a week.“ Then go to the store, buy fruits and vegetables, and schedule pilates classes. Do this for each value and goal.
