Clearly identify your “why” to motivate you to meet your goals
from Finish What You Start: The Art of Following Through, Taking Action, Executing, & Self-Discipline by Peter Hollins
How to Apply This
-
Write down one ultimate goal you’ve set for yourself.
-
Answer the following questions to gain clarity on “why” you want to achieve that goal.
- What will I get by completing this goal?
Money? Fitness? Experience? A sense of happiness and fulfillment in life?
- How will my life change or benefit from meeting this goal?
A better home? A nicer car? A promotion? A new career? More peace?
-How will my family benefit?
Imagine smiles on their faces as you give them a better life and make them proud.
- What impact will I have on others?
Perhaps you will be a role model, mentor others, or donate to charity.
- What positive emotions will I feel when I complete this goal?
Happiness? Pride? Self-esteem? Empowered?
- Are the sacrifices I have to make worth the end result? -
Review your answers.
These will serve as your motivators to achieve your goals. -
Create distinct and memorable prompts to remind you of these motivators.
Be creative; use all five senses – vivid images, sounds, textures, scents, and tastes. -
Display these prompts so you will be exposed to them often during the day.
Out of sight is out of mind. -
Change and switch them periodically to avoid growing used to them.
If they become too familiar, you may not notice them.
