Choose organic foods

from The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals by Michael Pollan

How to Apply This

  1. Learn to identify organic food.
Look for the symbol for organic in the package.

  2. Buy from natural food stores.
Natural food stores exist in cities and towns now across the country, such as Whole Food Supermarket and others alike. These might be a bit pricier but have great choices and also carry their own organic or natural brands.

  3. Get acquainted with the organic brands in your conventional supermarket.
Many supermarkets have their own organic brands.

  4. Buy organics that are not imported.
Many organic products travel from far. For example, you might find packages of asparagus that say “from Argentina.” Find and buy the products grown here that support the national economy.

  5. Buy organic grass-fed meat.
Organic grass-fed meat is from cattle raised eating grass instead of corn. Research has found that meat from grass-fed animals has Omega 3 oils that corn-fed animals lack.

  6. Buy organics produce.
Produce certified organic has been grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. They are healthier for you and the planet.

  7. Get cage-free and free-range chickens and eggs.
Free-range organic eggs come from cage-free chickens grown without antibiotics or hormones and fed organic food without pesticides. Both the chickens and the eggs are more nutritious.
