Build trust with people you are trying to coach

Instructions

  1. Only coach the right people.
Some people are not ready to be coached. Only people that are open to learning, willing to work hard, and able to accept their shortcomings are ready to be coached. If somebody does not have these qualities, you will not be able to build the trust necessary for a successful relationship.
  2. Learn free-form listening.
Listening to people properly is crucial. Instead of simply waiting for your turn to speak, give them your full attention. Ask more questions to get to the heart of what they are really trying to say. People trust you more when they can tell that you are really listening to them.
  3. Be honest.
Honesty is another cornerstone of trust. Always give people feedback about their performance, even if it is negative. When delivering negative feedback, do it in private, so people do not feel that they are being publicly attacked.
  4. Guide people instead of telling them what to do.
Telling people exactly how to solve problems does not help them develop and grow. Instead, you should give examples of similar situations you have faced and tell stories about how you managed them. This helps to guide people and develop solutions on their own rather than simply doing what you tell them. Doing this demonstrates that you trust their judgment and ability to make their own decisions.
  5. Believe in them.
The best way to build a strong relationship with somebody is to show them that you believe in them more than they believe in themselves. Always push them to reach their full potential and give them praise regularly.
