Stretch your team for amazing results

Instructions

  1. Set Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs).
Set aspirational objectives for your team, and have individual team members set for themselves too. Rather than focusing only on company objectives and metrics such as product releases, bookings, hiring, and customers; encourage them to include bigger picture goals that both mobilize the entire organization and are challenging to achieve.

  2. Expect and allow for failure.
Unlike with management and company objectives, where you should expect a 100% achievement from your team, expect about 60-70% attainment of aspirational goals. This means allowing for failure 30-40% of the time.

  3. Push hard but not too far.
Always consider the realities on the ground when pushing your team to achieve aspirational goals. Throughout the goal-setting process, you must be able to convey two things to them: the importance of the outcome, and the belief that it’s attainable.
