Use the substitution approach when faced with difficult problems.
Sometimes, it is difficult to find a solution to a problem. When this happens, instead of wasting time and energy on the target problem, find an easier, related heuristic problem to solve. The word “heuristic” refers to a simple procedure that helps find adequate solutions to difficult problems. This process is known as substitution.
- When faced with difficult questions, answer easier ones instead.
For example, let’s say you have a target problem where you have to figure out how happy you are with your life these days. Substitute this with a simpler, heuristic problem where all you have to do is figure out what your mood is right now. Although your answer to the heuristic problem is not the exact answer to your target problem, it will suffice.
