Embrace the power of choice.

When you tell yourself that you “have to” do something, you are forfeiting your right to choose. Exercise your power of choice and actively choose to do things; you will be a lot happier and relaxed for it. You will also be able to participate in activities that are aligned with your goals and interests.


  1. Change your thought process from “I have to” to “I choose to.”
    Every time you feel like you “have to” do something, pause and tell yourself, “I am choosing to do this.”
  2. Choose to participate in essential activities and opportunities.
    Don’t waste your time on the nonessential ones. Ask yourself, “What is the most valuable result I can achieve in this job?” and participate in activities that will help you accomplish that outcome. Forget about the rest.


I think this habit helped me change my attitude in a very important way. I realized whenever I felt like I "had" to do something, my motivation would start to drop, especially when things got hard... I guess it's about autonomy - when I felt like it was my decision, and I took the time to make the decisions I felt would help me the most, I was a lot more motivated and happy.
