Leave a successor who can go beyond you.

The last great gift that a leader can give to the organization is to leave a successor. Leadership transition has to be planned and well-executed; however, not many people think about it in advance.

Writer Lorin Woolfe says, “The ultimate test for a leader is not whether he or she makes smart decisions and takes decisive action, but whether he or she teaches others to be leaders and builds an organization that can sustain its success even when he or she is not around.”

  1. Put your ego aside, and strive to create successors who can go beyond you.
Your goal should be to hand off the baton at the moment when you are still running at maximum speed.
  2. Plan to hand off the baton of leadership mid-stride when you are still running at your peak.
If you began to slow down, it’s probably too late.
