Create a shutdown ritual after which you don’t engage in any work activities or thoughts.

A shutdown ritual promotes work-life balance. Once you end your work, you don’t entertain any work-related thoughts, and this frees up your mental energy and makes you feel at peace.

  1. Finalize your to-do list and email inbox.
Take a final look at your to-do list and move the items that aren’t completed to a “tomorrow’s list.” You may also want to check your email one last time to ensure that there is nothing urgent left to do.
  2. Say, “Shutdown complete,” or create your own personalized ritual.
Say the words “shutdown complete” to finish the shutdown ritual, or create your own personalized ritual. For example, you may wash your face, sing a song, or do some push-ups.
